Best of Kenya

This dessert was created by White House Executive Pastry Chef Roland Mesnier for the State Dinner in honor of Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki and his wife, Lucy Kibaki, on October 6, 2003, during the George W. Bush administration. In order to honor both presidents, Mesnier prepared an old fashioned coffee grinder with a yellow rose to symbolize both Texas and Kenya. Next he molded coffee ice cream into the shape of coffee beans filled with coffee liqueur. Finally, he ringed the ensemble with white chocolate espresso cups filled with a banana and tea mousse and decorated with animals native to Kenya.
